Preoperative instructions for GLP1 Medications
If you take a GLP-1 medication (such as semaglutide, tirzepatide, or a similar medication), it may slow the emptying of your stomach. This can increase the amount of food or liquid remaining in your stomach during surgery and may increase the risk of regurgitation or aspiration (breathing in food, saliva, or stomach contents) while you are under anesthesia.
For this reason, you are required to follow a clear liquid diet for 24 hours before your scheduled surgery. Following these instructions helps ensure your stomach is as empty as possible and supports a safer anesthesia experience. Please follow the specific instructions provided by your surgical and anesthesia teams regarding which clear liquids are permitted and when you must stop all oral intake.
Clear liquids include:
-
Water
-
Clear electrolyte or sports drinks
-
Apple juice or white grape juice
-
Sodas
-
Plain tea or black coffee without milk or cream
-
Clear gelatin, without added fruit or toppings
Avoid: solid foods, milk or cream, smoothies, protein shakes, juice with pulp, broth, and any other non-clear liquids.
You must also follow your surgical and anesthesia team’s instructions regarding when to stop drinking completely. Unless you have been given different instructions, stop all liquids at the specific time provided by your surgical team, generally 2 hours prior to your procedure time. Do not eat or drink anything after that time.
Following these instructions is an important part of preparing safely for anesthesia and surgery. If you have questions about your diet or medication instructions, please contact your surgical or anesthesia team before your procedure.
